Ransomware cyber-attack a wake-up call

Global Ransomware Attack Strikes 70K Systems (& Counting)

Security wonks are calling it the biggest cyberattack ever.

The cyber-extortion attack known as WannaCry spread quickly around the world due to some unusual factors coming together.

WannaCry works by encrypting data on a computer that has been infected.

There was a "Ransomware" outbreak called "WannaCry" over the weekend in north central OH, according to authorities.

The severity of Wanacrypt has been so devastating that Microsoft developed a fix for out of date versions of its Windows operating systems. The hackers exploited software code from the National Security Agency that leaked online.

A hacking group called Shadow Brokers released the malware in April claiming to have discovered the flaw from the NSA, according to Kaspersky Lab, a Russian cybersecurity provider.

"For those organizations who have not yet applied the security update, we suggest you immediately deploy Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010". Playing with fire finally caught up with the victims.

It hit 200,000 victims across the world since Friday and is seen as an "escalating threat", said Rob Wainwright, the head of Europol, Europe's policing agency.

Tom Bossert, the Homeland Security Adviser under U.S. President Donald Trump, told ABC television that the cyberattack was for now "under control" in the United States. Even Russia's interior ministry said it was hit.

Anyone who hasn't updated their Windows PC recently.

The problem comes from older versions of Windows or those without Windows Updates, as these were not patched by Microsoft and were left open to attacks. The same goes for cloud services, though they can be helpful.

NHS Digital said the attack "was not specifically targeted at the NHS and is affecting organizations from across a range of sectors".

It's also important to note that, more recent operating systems, such as Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, already have patches available since March. Install Microsoft's patch. 3. Note this means that the backup can't be on your computer but should be in the cloud or on an external hard drive. Install all Windows updates. 5.

The breadth of the attack indicates the software spread around the globe possibly for weeks but lay dormant when first introduced into a network, said Sean Dillon, a senior security analyst with RiskSense Inc.

The researcher tweeted that he initially didn't know that his actions would stop the malware. The ease of stopping the attack suggests the hackers were new to this game.

'I'm anxious about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn on their machines on Monday, ' he said.

India's respective agency - CERT-In - or Computer Emergency Response Team of India, has also sent out alerts to the internet users in the country against the WannaCry Ransomware.

The spread of the virus slowed over the weekend but the respite might only be brief, experts have warned.
