American flags around the world will be flying at half-staff for the next few days in memory of John Glenn, the pioneering astronaut and long-serving senator who died Thursday at the age of 95.

US space agency NASA said Glenn died Thursday at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

Glenn made history in 1962 as the first NASA astronaut to circle the planet - as a follow-up to Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's orbital feat a year earlier, plus two US suborbital spaceflights.

Astronaut John Glenn during the Mercury-Atlas 6 spaceflight becoming the first American to orbit Earth on February 20, 1962.

And at Ohio State, Glenn "adopted as his focus for life bringing young people in to have opportunities to get to do and see some of the things that he had seen, if they realize that science and math [are] critically important", Bolden said. Reaching speeds of more than 17,000 miles per hour, he circled the globe three times in just under five hours in the Friendship 7 capsule.

Glenn was credited with reviving United States pride after the Soviet Union's early domination of manned space exploration.

Nine years later, in 1974, he was elected as a Democrat to the US Senate, where he served until 1999. Years later, he returned to space at age 77 to help test the effects of space travel on the elderly. The last survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts was 95. Glenn was considered one of the definitive American national heroes. But a ponderous address at the Democratic National Convention - people walked out - caused Carter to remark that Glenn was "the most boring man I ever met".

Glenn's historic flight made him a favorite of President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, who encouraged him to launch a political career that finally took off after a period as a businessman made him a millionaire. Glenn had a heart valve replacement in 2014. Glenn is survived by his wife of 73 years, his childhood sweetheart, Annie Castor.
