The Brazilian Soccer Team's Home Town Has Begun 30 Days of Mourning

Brazilian football club Chapecoense has paid homage to members of their squad killed in a Colombian plane crash by sharing a poignant cartoon of the players receiving halos from God in heaven.

"A tragedy that grieves us".

A plane carrying 81 people crashed in Colombia on Monday night with local police confirming that just five people have survived.

Poor weather conditions made it initially hard for rescue teams to access the crash site, but Alfredo Bocanegra, the head of Colombia's aviation authority, told reporters at about 4 a.m. Tuesday that search efforts continued despite heavy rain.

The latest news of death toll including some "Team Chapecoense" on the said tragic event is 71 persons leaving 6 survivors.

In a statement (h/t Malkin), the Jose Maria Cordova International Airport said the plane reported electrical flaws around 10 p.m. local time.

The aircraft is owned by LaMia, a company with roots in Venezuela and that has a close relationship with several top South American squads.

Moments before the flight departed, the team's coaching staff gave an interview to a Bolivian television station in which they praised the airline, saying it brought them good fortune when it flew them to Colombia last month for the championship's quarterfinals, which they won. Authorities said that six passengers survived the crash. The incident is even more heartbreaking as the players, officials and supporters of the Club as well as the journalists were on their way to the first leg, final of the Copa Sudamericana (South America's second most prestigeous Club competition) against Atletico Nacional of Colombia.

South America's soccer federation extended its condolences to the entire Chapecoense community and said its president, Luis Dominguez, was on his way to Medellin.

President Michel Temer said Air Force planes would be deployed to help relatives of the victims to travel to Colombia and for the transfer of the bodies to Brazil, AP says.

Chapecoense, from the small city of Chapeco, were in the middle of a fairy-tale season.

Players Alan Luciano Ruschel, Marcos Danilo Padilha and Jacson Ragnar Follmann were listed as survivors in a statement from the disaster management agency.

Their opponents, Colombian team Atletico Nacional, have offered to concede the game to ensure Chapecoense are declared the champions.

Businesses were closed across the grief-stricken Brazilian city of Chapecó on Tuesday as residents struggled to process the devastating tragedy that had befallen their beloved soccer team Chapecoense. "The dream was over early this morning".
