Should burning the American flag be against the law?

President-elect Donald Trump speaks at his election night rally in Manhattan

On Oct. 28, 1989, demonstrators at Seattle's Capitol Hill Post Office burned an American flag.

Recht has practiced constitutional law for almost four decades. But the First Amendment exists to protect "speech critical of the government".

But Donald Trump took aim at it anyway.

President-elect Donald Trump's latest proposal - to jail anyone who burns the American flag - faced a backlash from much of political Washington on Tuesday, including from within his Republican Party.

Haggerty grew emotional as he responded.

She tweeted on Wednesday 10 reasons why she believes the US flag deserves to burn, including the nation's history of slavery and the USA war on terror. The protesters then chanted, "America the red, white, and blue, we spit on you". And that's not how I feel. He said that could help bring people to the table to come up with the best replacement.

Johnson was with several dozen other protesters when he poured kerosene on an American flag and lit it on fire during the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, The New York Times reported in 1989.

"I think prison would be a great idea if we don't throw them out of the country", Truex said.

In addition to ignoring the Supreme Court's clear teaching that flag burning is constitutionally protected speech, Mr. Trump's tweet also casually suggests that citizens should lose their citizenship as a "penalty" for such acts.

A 1931 case before the high court set the first precedent that the way a flag is used can be protected under the First Amendment. I think more now I want to unify people.

There is little recent polling related to flag-burning, but past surveys have shown the issue divides Americans.

"We have a First Amendment right, "House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Tuesday". About 1,000 veterans reportedly gathered at the school Sunday to protest the college's decision to remove all flags from campus, including the USA flag, after students allegedly burned flags to protest Trump's election.
