Especially, since this is one state that both party president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not want to lose - as it is their home state. Modi's remarks came after the BJP won maximum seats in the Maharashtra and Gujarat municipal council polls.

A report in The Indian Express just ahead of the polling day claimed that a polarisation had taken place against the BJP with even ally Shiv Sena joining the Congress and NCP corner in targeting the prime minister over currency woes.

The party won 890 seats out of a total 3,705 across 147 municipal councils and 25 nagar panchayats in the elections, which were held on Sunday.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani hailed the victory as people's endorsement of Modi's two recent steps - surgical strikes across the LoC and demonetization.

State Congress chief Ashok Chavan, who led the protest here, said his party will also raise the hardships caused by the decision to common people in the winter session of the state Legislature, beginning on December 5.

Though municipal poll results depend on the basis of local issues, poll pundits had predicted a setback against BJP because of demonetisation woes and ban on cooperative banking.

He said these results across India "illustrate that people want all-round progress of the nation and will not tolerate corruption and misgovernance". Right from Vapi in south Gujarat to Gondal in Saurashtra region, people have chosen BJP over Congress.

As per the final results declared by the Gujarat State Election Commission, BJP won in Rajkot where it bagged the Gondal taluka panchayat, which was held by Congress and went for mid-term poll.

The BJP tally went up from 64 to 109 seats. BJP won its Vapi municipality of Valsad district by bagging 41 out of 44 seats. In the 230 taluka panchayats where the Congress controlled only 37 earlier, it had improved its tally to 132 while in comparison BJP's rule stood reduced from 193 earlier to merely 73 taluka panchayats. There are 3,705 seat spanning the 147 municipal councils and 17 nagar panchayats.

Apart from these three elections, Gujarat SEC conducted by-elections on 31 seats of various municipalities, taluka panchayats and district panchayts across the state. Out of total 16 seats of different municipalities, BJP bagged 14 of them.

BJP made inroads into the Congress and NCP strongholds, winning 851 seats.

Tens days after Modi announced that his government was scrapping the Rs.500 and Rs.1000 notes in order to curb black money and corruption, the Bharatiya Janata Party scored major victories in Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, while performing well in West Bengal and Tripura.
