SC refuses to entertain plea to play national anthem in courts

It also granted 10 days for states and union territories to give effect to the directions. Non-compliance would lead to withdrawal of "recognition" of the erring institutions, he added.

The state government's order comes a day after the Supreme Court asked all cinemas to play the national anthem before a film is screened "for the love of the motherland".

He claimed the move would "play an important role" in imbibing a sense of nationalism among students. "We must respect national anthem".

A bench of justices, Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy had passed the order while hearing a petition referring to the provisions in the Preventions of Insults of National Honour Act, 1971.

The doors to cinema halls can be opened after the National Anthem is played or sung.

"There shall not be dramatization of the National Anthem and it should not be included as a part of any variety show".

The court said that the same could not be mandatory at the courts and bar councils across the country.

"The citizens must realize that they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to the National Anthem, which is the symbol of the constitutional patriotism and inherent national quality".

The court prohibited commercial exploitation of the National Anthem.

A petition has been filed seeking that the singing of the national anthem be made mandatory in the Supreme Court, High Courts and also the lower courts.
