Lion fatally mauls circus trainer while audience screams

The lion reared up and savaged the trainer as horrified children in the audience screamed

Accompanied by dance music, trainers walk around the enclosure with a stick close to the lions, before one of the animals pounces on Shaheen and takes him to the ground. Other trainers tried to help Shaheen by poking the lion with sticks but it was already too late.

But suddenly one of the lions brutally attacked Mr Shaheen, dragging him to the ground while mauling his neck.

The footage was caught by a spectator.

He was declared dead after being rushed to the Andalusian Salam hospital as a result of his injuries. He had worked as a circus trainer for 10 years according to his brother.

The lion is reported to be a new addition to the show, imported from South Africa.

Circus spokesman Mohammed Mustafa said the attack happened as the lion was in the mating season and thus was behaving erratically.

The lion has been withdrawn from future performances while a vet examines it.

An Egyptian lion tamer has died from his injuries after being attacked by a lion during a show in Alexandria. The attack was so horrific that the audience could be heard screaming in the background.
