Konta splits with Spanish coach

Johanna Konta and Esteban Carril

In two years she's risen from outside the top 140 in the world to the top 10 and given her success in the past year, it's a major surprise she's split from her coach.

There has so far been no comment from Konta or her agent but Carril confirmed the split via email, "I am no longer working with Johanna but I want to give Johanna the opportunity to speak about it rather than me".

The British number one ended the Grand Slam season with a run to the fourth round at the US Open and will have high hopes of another decent showing Down Under when the players arrive at Melbourne Park in January for the year's first 'Slam.

After her family settled in Eastbourne, Konta trained at Roehampton, but in the summer of 2014 she linked up with Carril and another Spanish coach, Jose-Manuel Garcia, who are based in Gijon.

Johanna Konta has surprisingly split with her coach Esteban Carril after breaking into the world's top 10 in 2016.

With Vanek, who joined her in 2014, Pliskova jumped into the top 10 and reached the US Open final.

Carril also introduced Konta to mental coach Juan Coto, whose influence has arguably been even more important in helping her overcome performance anxiety.

She also won the Women's Tennis Association's most improved player award for 2016, having been ranked 147 in June 2015.

Milos Raonic, the world No 3 and Wimbledon runner-up, has parted company with Carlos Moya, who had formed a two-man coaching team alongside Riccardo Piatti, with some help from John McEnroe. "I wish him all the best".
