Hostage situation at Jacksonville, Florida, credit union over; suspect in custody

Mom of bank employee on scene waiting to hear about her 18 yr old son. His phone is going to voicemail. She's 'nervous'. Terrified

A bank robbery suspect was holding several hostages today at a credit union in the north Florida city of Jacksonville, and SWAT team members were on the scene, authorities said.

Two hostages were able to run out of the building, distracting the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Nicholas Daquan Humphrey, and allowing SWAT to breach the building and get everyone out.

Thursday morning's incident began with a gunman taking hostages inside the Community First Credit Union.

Throughout the negotiations, the robber released some of the hostages, according to a video from Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams, which was posted on the police department's Facebook page.

The standoff, which saw hostages threatened with guns to their heads, ended after two hidden hostages escaped and collaborated with police and SWAT, directing them to a concealed entrance to the bank.

JSO responds to call about a possible hostage situation and heads to the Community First Credit Union on Edgewood Avenue West.

The suspect was then taken into custody by the SWAT team and has yet to be identified, FOX News 13 reports.

A police officer leads a hostage to safety during an attempted robbery at Community First Credit Union Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, in Jacksonville, Fla.

She told News4Jax he had told her two people were shot - however police later said no one was injured. That's when the SWAT team decided to make their move and storm the bank, ultimately freeing the remaining hostages.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda says an unknown number of hostages are inside the Community First Credit Union.

She said that an initial 911 call indicated that someone may have been shot during the robbery Thursday, but the sheriff's office has not been able to confirm that.

SWAT and hostage negotiators are on scene.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the armed man who became agitated, threatening to kill some of the hostages. "We're asking for everyone's cooperation at this time".

While the situation was resolved peacefully, the victims - employees and bank customers - are "shaken up", Williams said.
