Grief turns to anger amid reports of lack of fuel in crash

People surround a church during a mass in memoriam of the players of Brazilian team Chapecoense Real killed in a plane crash in the Colombian mountains in Chapeco in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina

The pilot of a plane that crashed on Monday while flying members of a Brazilian soccer team to a competition in Colombia pleaded to make an immediate landing because the aircraft was out of fuel, according to a recording leaked to Colombian news outlets.

In the sometimes chaotic exchange with the air traffic tower, the pilot of the British-built jet requested permission to land because of "fuel problems" without making a formal distress call.

The operator tells pilot Miguel Quiroga he will have to wait seven minutes to land.

Growing ever more desperate, the pilot eventually declared a "total electrical failure", Upegui said, before the plane quickly began to lose speed and altitude.

Recordings of the pilot reveal that the plane carrying the Chapecoense football team may have run out of fuel before crashing on Tuesday.

Investigators have yet to announce any single cause for the crash and a full analysis is expected to take months.

On Wednesday thousands gathered in soccer stadiums in both Brazil and Colombia under banners saying "Football Has No Borders" to mourn the crash victims.

"Everybody has been so affected by this".

"We believe in sport", Atletico Mineiro president Daniel Nepomuceno said.

It was not the first heartwarming gesture from Atletico Nacional since the tragedy.

Rival Brazilian clubs also rallied behind their crestfallen rival. Coritiba, Corinthians, Palmeiras, Portuguesa, Santos and Sao Paulo issued a joint statement in which they offered to loan players for free in 2017.

Meanwhile, players such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Wayne Rooney also expressed their support on social media. He has not traveled from Brazil in more than year, fearing arrest if he does. The victor of the two-game final would have earned a berth in next year's Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.

"We have lost everything".

Chapecoense acting president Ivan Tozzo said Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were to be at the funeral.

In the squad's home town of Chapeco, in southern Brazil, temporary structures have been set up in the football stadium for an open-air wake on Saturday. Most businesses and schools have remained closed.

Osmar Machado, whose son, Filipe, a defender on the Chapecoense team, died on his father's 66th birthday, questioned why the plane, which was flying at its maximum range on the flight from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was transporting the team. Play the players that are recovering from injury, which is five or six players, and another who is ready to play, and then complete the team with juniors.

Goalkeeper Danilo was rescued alive from the crash site but later died in the hospital.
