Emergency eye surgery makes Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer uncertain for Thursday

Mike Zimmer was to have emergency eye surgery, uncertain for Thursday

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer will not coach Thursday night after a third eye surgery in 30 days to fix a detached retina in his right eye.

General manager Rick Spielman said Thursday that Zimmer was having issues with his vision Wednesday.

Spielman will speak with the media on a conference call Thursday morning at 10.

Zimmer still keeps a home in suburban Dallas, which is where his son and current Vikings linebackers coach Adam Zimmer lived during his middle school and high school years.

Zimmer had surgery to fix a torn retina on his right eye November 1, after he had scratched his eye during the Vikings' loss to the Chicago Bears on October 31. If he is able to coach, it will his first game against them as a head coach. "But we have to look after his health".

"It's unfortunate this incident happened last night before a game today", Spielman said.

"We have to see how his eye responds to the surgery", Spielman said. Doctors had initially told Zimmer he ran the risk of going blind in the eye if he did not have the first surgery. "I think after we met, I expressed to him specifically that potentially going blind in one eye is not worth one game in the National Football League". The Vikings started the season 5-0 before losing four straight and five of their last six.

"As hard headed as he is, and as tough minded as he is, we had some talks. about what is important in life and what isn't", Spielman said about Zimmer.

Injuries have hampered the Vikings all season, and the head coach has not been immune. The Vikings hoped at that point, Spielman said, that the second surgery would alleviate Zimmer's vision problems, but the coach's vision declined Wednesday afternoon, and doctors determined Zimmer would need emergency surgery.
