Creator Of McDonald's Big Mac Dies At 98

"Today, we celebrate the 98 inspirational years of Big Mac inventor, Michael "Jim" Delligatti". But McDonald's was resistant to the idea because its simple line of burgers, fries and shakes were selling well.

His creation? The Big Mac-a hamburger with (get this): two buns!

Shell out $3.99 for the classic Big Mac, a 563 calorie gut bomb featuring 41% of your daily recommended sodium intake. Ray Kroc. He became a franchise owner of the renowned fast food chain, and also opened the first MacDonald's franchise in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Mention a Big Mac and anyone would know what it is.

In the end, Delligatti went on to own and operate 47 McDonald's locations.

But he's not the only one - worldwide, McDonald's sells 900 million Big Macs a year.

After the Big Mac's invention, the company expanded its menu further, creating an age of new menu items such as the Egg McMuffin and Filet-o-Fish.

I've never understood the Big Mac.

Michael "Jim" Delligatti was born August 2, 1918, in Uniontown, according to public records.

The Big Mac contains 508 calories in the United Kingdom and is now sold in more than 100 countries around the world. In the last forty-four years, there have been only eight days in which he did not eat a Big Mac - most recently, on 23 November 2000.

There have been reports of thefts of Big Mac burgers from a McDonald's in Shrewsbury on the day it has been announced its creator has died.

Delligatti became a McDonald's franchisee in 1957. He served in the US Army during World War II.

McDonald's described Delligatti as a "legendary" person, who "made a lasting impression on our brand". Delligatti owned nearly 50 McDonald's restaurants in Western PA, which made him one of the company's largest franchise holders. "We will remember Jim as an insightful franchisee, a knowledgeable businessman, and an honorable gentleman". 'The bulb was already there. His sons and two of his grandchildren are McDonald's franchisees.
