US Marshal Patrick Carothers killed during shoot-out with wanted suspect in Georgia
Patrick Carothers, 53 and deputy commander of the Marshal Service's Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, died after being shot twice as a team of officers tried to serve a warrant at a mobile home in rural Long County, authorities said.
According to a news release, Carothers was part of a team executing a warrant for Dontrell Montrese Carter.
Carter was located in a single-wide trailer near the 11800 block of Tibit Drive near Ludowici.
The Sumter Sheriff's Office, the Sumter Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service continued a search for Carter since September 18, when Carter shot at deputies during a chase after the domestic incident. He died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah.
"It's awful", said John Edgar of the SERFTF that Carothers led.
"Just a fantastic example for the entire Greater Atlanta Christian family", Fincher said.
The U.S. Marshals Service said the suspect was killed by officers who returned fire.
Long County Sheriff's deputies, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and FBI teams were inspecting the scene at Spring Creek Mobile Home Park on Friday afternoon, WSAV-TV reported.
Multiple agencies responded to the call, including Long County deputies, the GBI, ATF and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Investigators said they though Carter had cut the long hair he once wore, a Sumter police spokeswoman said.
"Pat is a hero", David Harlow, deputy director of the Marshals Service, said in a statement Friday offering condolences to Carothers' wife and five children. "I know that his legacy will live on in the proud annals of the U.S. Marshals Service and in the memory of his fellow law enforcement officers from coast to coast".
Deputy U.S. Attorney General Sally Q. Yates lauded Carothers as an "inspiring leader and an exemplary public servant".
