Djokovic still motivated to be best in world

Which is why the 29-year-old Scot will be the man to beat next week as he attempts to win the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time to seal the year-end number one ranking.

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic recovered from losing a tense first set to defeat Dominic Thiem 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 on Sunday at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Jamie now sits at four in the doubles rankings, with no chance to claim the number one spot before the end of the year, but he and Soares could leapfrog Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert to become the number one team.

Djokovic was edged out 12-10 in a thrilling tie-break in the first round, coming after both players held serve throughout the first 12 games of the match, as Thiem kept his cool to move into the lead.

Djokovic lost the first set to Thiem and angrily slammed the ball into the ground, sending it bouncing into the stands and into a staircase.

Thiem had three further set points to Djokovic's one before nailing a forehand victor at 11-10 to huge roars from the sell-out crowd in the arena. I think no one else deserves it more than him.

Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland poses with the championship trophy after defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia in their 2016 US Open Men's Singles final match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NY on September 11, 2016.

To his credit, he stayed in the match, trailing 3-2 before Djokovic went 4-2 ahead and then secured another significant break. "That's the case with me, even after playing 10 plus years at the professional level".

The Scot has packed in 48 sets of tennis since the US Open, which compared to the 26 he played between NY and the O2 last season, looks very heavy on the legs indeed. Thiem at least managed to win two games in the decider, but he committed 14 unforced errors in the third set compared to Djokovic's four.

Djokovic will next face Raonic while Monfils takes on Thiem on Monday.

"I'm the only player that shows his frustration on the court?"

Thiem had his first set point at 6-3 in the tiebreaker, but he double-faulted twice and then put a backhand into the net to make it 6-6.

"When I step on the court I will have a little more confidence and feel better about myself". The Austrian, who was making his debut at the O2 Arena, also blew set points at 6-5, 7-6, and 8-7, and 10-9. Today I think I was very solid from the first game and I was very confident.

In danger of another frustrating loss, Djokovic was finally able to turn his anger into a positive at the start of the second set as unloaded a series of powerful winners.

Thiem, who met the watching Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho after the match, admitted that he had "lost a little bit of energy" after the opening set.
