Big 12 Conference votes against expansion, to remain at 10 member schools

Remember, this is the same group that trumpeted virtues of being the only Power Five conference with true round-robin football scheduling, and then suddenly examined expansion - and then ultimately sticking with the status quo.

The Big 12 is sticking with 10.

"We would never say never, but we do feel it would be wrong to indicate it is an active agenda item", said Boren, Oklahoma's president. "It was an endorsement and reinvestment in the strength of the 10 we have".

Boren, the chairman of the Big 12 board of directors and the only president who has been in the league since its inception in 1996, insisted he has never seen "such a unified sense of goal on the board". - University of Cincinnati interim president Beverly J. Davenport and athletic director Mike Bohn, in a joint statement.

Since announcing an open casting call for schools to express their interest back in July, Bowlsby conducted 60-minute video conference interviews and hosted visits from the 11 final candidates: Air Force, BYU, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Colorado State, Houston, Rice, SMU, South Florida, Tulane and UCF. According to a report from Sports Illustrated, the Big 12 is talking to its TV partners - ESPN and Fox - about adding TV revenue to the contract, which runs through 2024-25. Right now, the Big 12 doesn't have a guaranteed spot in the CFP, with an expansion to eight teams or potentially even six teams, they stand a bigger chance at getting a chunk of that Playoff change. Despite the ruling, the school will not be deterred from building "champions for life". "It is certainly not a decision where we'd say we're never going to consider it again". He said once the decision was made not to expand, there was no discussion about individual schools considered as candidates. I think we're always going to be concerned about revenue.

Boren and Bowlsby didn't comment specifically on the TV deals. The networks reportedly aren't in favor of expansion now.

The Big 12 announced in June that it will return its football championship game beginning in the 2017 season, regardless of a decision on expansion. Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said figuring new ways to generate more is one of the conference's top priorities.

UCF athletics director Danny White reiterated his past statements that the Knights can thrive in the AAC. Apparently, the league decided that none of the potential candidates offered that.

But Boren expressed a commitment to the Big 12 on Monday. "We believe BYU can significantly contribute to the athletic and academic excellence of a P5 conference".

"I can tell you personally I'm pissed off with the whole "No vote was ever taken" because of the amount of hours we had to put into this", said a source at one of the schools that was under consideration.

Horns Digest, Sports Illustrated and ESPN were the first to tweet the conference will remain at 10 teams after months of speculation. This is excellent news on the basketball side of things, as the Big 12 is known for the brutality, competitive nature of their balanced conference schedule. Plus, the exploration of expansion was not a guarantee that the Big 12 would add members. Maybe the league would expand, maybe not.
