Catholic Church updates cremation guidelines

Under the new guidelines the catholic church says that human ashes should not be scattered around or kept at home.

Father Mike said the Catholic Church Still prefers burials, but recognizes in some circumstances cremation is better for families.

Some local Catholics say they believe the recent guidelines for cremation by the Vatican that include not spreading ashes or keeping them in homes this week are acceptable. It said that cremation ashes belong in cemeteries or "sacred places", like a mausoleum.

Cremation was approved by the Vatican in 1963, stating that it is only allowed as long as it does not entail a denial of the resurrection.

The Vatican released the new instructions ahead of All Souls Day on November 2 when the faithful are supposed to honor the dead.

The new document from the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was published to counter "new ideas contrary to the church's faith", the Church said. With the new rules, cremains may only be kept at home upon special permission granted by a bishop.

She said: "This is the Catholics trying to keep the people connected to the Church".

At a Vatican briefing, Mueller was asked if the pope had any reservations about the new instructions especially about prohibiting family members from keeping the cremated ashes at home. The document said remains can not be divided among family members or put in lockets or other mementoes.

The document noted that scattering the ashes in the air, land or sea gave the appearance of "pantheism, naturalism or nihilism". The ruling also suggested that those who insist on scattering the ashes of their departed loved ones should be denied a Christian funeral, The Times reports.

Yahoo stated that the new cremation is dated August 15, 2016, with Pope Francis approving it on March 18.

The new guidelines "re-affirm the Church's belief in the sacredness of the human body and the resurrection of the dead", he said. "We have to get over this individualistic thinking", he replied. The practice of divvying up saints' bodies for veneration - a hand here, a thigh bone there - was a fad centuries ago but is no longer in favor.
