Packers' Sam Shields (concussion) headed for injured reserve, hopes to return

Knile Davis

NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported that corner Sam Shields is headed to injured reserve due to a concussion.

Through six weeks of the season, the Packers rank 15th in Adjusted Passing Net Expected Points per play. On Tuesday, the team announced that it has placed him on injured reserve, putting him on the shelf for at least eight weeks.

The Packers have yet to make a decision on whether to use the designated-to-return tag on Shields, but he joins running back John Crockett, cornerback Makinton Dorleant and defensive tackle Tyler Kuder on the list.

Shields, 28, is now in the third year of a four-year, $39 million deal. Shields has suffered three concussions over the last three seasons, which might have contributed to his extended stay in the protocol.

Hopefully, Shields gets better, with the priority of protecting his brain and long-term health emphasized over his desire to get back on the football field.

McCarthy has repeatedly said Shields was making progress, something Shields even indicated via twitter in advance of today's announcement.

Shields suffered a concussion on opening day in Jacksonville on September 11 and hasn't returned.

"The plan for Sam is to get him healthy, number one", Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday.
