LASD sergeant dies after being shot in Lancaster; 1 in custody

At some point as the suspect was fleeing, the deputy shot him, according to police. He subsequently was arrested about 2 p.m., sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said.

LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell speaks at a press conference sharing details about the fatal shooting of Sgt. Steve Owen.

In this still frame from video provided by KABC-TV, Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and firefighters wheel a wounded man, a suspect in the shooting death of a deputy, to an ambulance in Lancaster, Calif., Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016.

Lovell allegedly jumped into the sergeant's patrol vehicle while a second deputy arrived at the scene, then rammed the deputy's vehicle with Owen's patrol auto.

He was arrested on Wednesday after sheriff's Sgt. Steven Owen was gunned down while responding to a burglary report.

In 2014, Sgt. Owen was one of several Lancaster deputies who received Sheriff's Department medals for meritorious conduct.

"This is the thing we all dread", Tyler said at a news conference.

Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris announced today that he will ask the city council to rename Lancaster Community Park as Sergeant Steve Owen Community Park. Authorities said Lovell left the area and the first responding deputy chased him on foot before Lovell attempted to use Owen's patrol vehicle to leave.

The suspect, an adult black male on parole, was shot and taken to the hospital after he led police on a frenzied chase through the neighborhood which left one other officer injured.

The family's public statement comes three days after Owen, 53, was fatally shot while responding to a residential burglary. "He's still my son, and I love him regardless", she said shortly before closing the door. "They worked on him for an hour but they were never able to stabilize him", Parris said.

Law enforcement officers and community members held a candlelight vigil for Owen at the Lancaster sheriff's station Wednesday.

Owen, 53, was shot to death while responding to a reported burglary on October 6. Owen was rushed to the hospital in a a sheriff's vehicle and died hours later, according to LASD Capt. Steve Katz.

The deputy chased the gunman, who ran to Owen's radio auto, got in and tried to steal it. Lovell, authorities said, placed the auto in reverse and hit a "radio vehicle" before exchanging gunfire with the deputy.

Authorities have not released the name of the 27-year-old suspect.

The attempted murder charge is for the deputy, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake, who is prosecuting the case. "Blue lives matter, they take care of the community", said Alberto Coredo, an area resident. Authorities said the suspect then fled from the area on foot and ran into another home with two teens inside.

Police say a New York man kept his grandmother's corpse wrapped in plastic bags for about five months because he was afraid of losing his housing, reports CBS New York.

Owen was a well-liked and decorated officer who was awarded medals for meritorious conduct for his role in ending a risky hostage situation, ABC News reported.
